چکیده

Persuasive systems make it possible to change people’s behaviour. These persuasive systems build into mobile applications can use the technology available in mobile devices (sensors, always connected and always nearby). This paper investigates how a mobile application can influences the domestic energy consumption. The study consists of two parts: an interview and a literature study. In the interview the usage of energy apps in the Netherlands is examined. The literature study combines the known behaviour changing techniques to reduce the household energy consumption with current behavioural changing apps. The results support the fact that it is possible to reduce the energy consumption with apps. The most successful factor is the existence of feedback in the application. By looking at the energy apps from the Dutch energy suppliers, they have not a substantial direct feedback element. This explains why these apps are not popular and how they can be improved.

Beyond Behavior Change: Household Retrofitting and ICT

Sustainability research about using Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) to reduce household energy consumption has recently focused on two potential strategies: “smart homes” that rely on sensors and technological innovations to automatically reduce the energy load, and tools that seek to persuade users to change their domestic habits, such as by using eco-feedback devices to rai...

Agent based Framework to Simulate Inhabitants' Behaviour in Domestic Settings for Energy Management

Inhabitants' behaviour is a significant factor that influences energy consumption and has been previously incorporated as static activity profiles within simulation for energy control & management. In this paper an agent-based approach to simulate reactive/deliberative group behaviour has been proposed and implemented. It takes into account perceptual, psychological (cognitive), social behaviou...

A Feasibility Study on Occupants' Behaviour and Energy Usage Patterns and Its Potential Integration with Building Information Modelling

Understanding how occupants manage their energy use in homes and how their behaviour influence household energy consumption in domestic environments has been challenging. There seems to be several major factors contributing towards achieving optimal performance in designing, constructing and maintaining a sustainable home using Building Information Modelling (BIM) based approaches. This study f...

Persuading Consumers to Reduce Their Consumption of Electricity in the Home

Previous work has identified that providing real time feedback or interventions to consumers can persuade consumers to change behaviour and reduce domestic electricity consumption. However, little work has investigated what exactly those feedback mechanisms should be. Most past work is based on an in-home display unit, possibly complemented by lower tariffs and delayed use of non-essential home...
